The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international, not for profit educational organization devoted to the study and recreation of pre-17th century (? - 1600AD) European and Middle Eastern Cultures. The members of the SCA endeavor to recapture the ambiance of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and also to rekindle the lost ideals of chivalry, courtesy, honor and graciousness. Participants study medieval martial arts, costuming, armor making, leather work, archery, heraldry, metalwork, vintning & brewing, cooking, dancing, calligraphy and manuscript illumination, needlecrafts, music, and much more. Feasts, tournaments, dances, guilds and classes are a few of the many activities offered by the SCA. Currently, there are eighteen geographic regions or kingdoms in the SCA. The Shire of Rockhaven is part of the Kingdom of Northshield. The Kingdom of Northshield encompasses Wisconsin, part of Michigan, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, a little nip of Iowa, and the Canadian Province of Manitoba. Click here for a map.
Our local branch, called the Shire of Rockhaven, has a membership from the central Minnesota communities of St. Cloud, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, Waite Park, and St. Joseph, as well as surrounding communities and the College of St. Benedict, St. John's University, St. Cloud Technical College and St. Cloud State University. The shire's borders extend quite some distance to the west, beyond Alexandria, Minnesota, but there are currently no active members from the western region of the official shire borders. Membership consists of a wide range of ages and interests. We have active Illumination, Archery, Fencing, Youth Combat and Heavy Combat groups, as well as other activities.
The Shire of Rockhaven meets regularly for business meetings (Curia) and social nights. Occasionally, we hold period parties in costume, or garb, called moots. Archery, fencing and fighter practice is generally conducted twice weekly, while the guilds set their own schedules. Please see the local calendar for dates and locations. New members and curious observers are warmly welcomed!
